A milestone for Pawa AI—and another step toward building AI that understands Africa and the Global South.

At the 2026 TEHAMA Awards, Pawa AI was recognized as 2nd Runner-Up in the AI & Data Science Excellence category.

It was a proud moment for our team. But for us, the significance of this recognition extends far beyond the award itself. It represents recognition of a direction we have been committed to for years: building artificial intelligence that is relevant to the people, languages, businesses, and realities of Africa and the wider Global South.

The award is a milestone. The mission is much bigger.

A Recognition of the Work Behind the Technology

Artificial intelligence is changing the world at an extraordinary pace. Every month, new models become more capable — reasoning over increasingly complex information, communicating through voice, understanding images, generating content, automating workflows, and increasingly acting as intelligent agents.

But one question remains critically important:

Who is this intelligence built to understand?

For much of the world, the answer is still complicated. Modern AI has made extraordinary progress, but representation remains uneven. Many of the world's languages, cultures, voices, and local contexts have historically received far less attention in the development of advanced AI systems.

This creates a gap:

  • A technological gap
  • A linguistic gap
  • A cultural gap
  • A privacy gap

And ultimately, an accessibility gap.

Pawa AI exists to help close that gap. Our goal is not simply to bring AI technology into Africa — our ambition is to help build the AI that Africa and the Global South need.

Why This Recognition Matters

Being recognized in the AI & Data Science Excellence category is particularly meaningful because data and AI sit at the heart of what we are building.

The future of artificial intelligence will not be determined by models alone. It will be shaped by the quality and diversity of the data behind those models, and by whether AI can meaningfully serve people who have historically been underrepresented in technology.

For Pawa AI, this means thinking deeply about:

  • Language — supporting the linguistic diversity of the continent
  • Speech — building for voice-first and oral communication
  • Culture — reflecting local context, not imported assumptions
  • Cost-efficiency — making AI economically accessible
  • Multimodal information — text, voice, and image working together
  • Accessibility and offline capability — designing for real-world infrastructure

We believe AI should not require people to abandon their natural ways of communicating in order to benefit from it. Instead, technology should become better at meeting people where they are.

Thank You

We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the TEHAMA Awards organizers, our partners, customers, collaborators, advisors, and everyone who has supported Pawa AI along the way.

Most importantly, we thank the people behind Pawa AI, and everyone who believes that technology built in Africa can compete on a global stage. This recognition belongs to all of you.

And We Are Just Getting Started

A certificate can recognize an achievement. A photograph can capture a moment. An award ceremony can mark a milestone.

But none of those things define the future. The work does.

At Pawa AI, we believe:

  • The future of artificial intelligence should be more inclusive, more multilingual, more contextual, and more accessible.
  • People should be able to interact with technology in ways that feel natural to them.
  • African languages deserve a place at the forefront of the AI revolution.
  • The Global South should have a stronger voice in defining the future of technology.
  • Companies born in Africa can build technologies that matter to the entire world.

The 2026 TEHAMA Awards recognition is not the end of our story — it is another marker along the road: a reminder of how far we have come, a validation of the direction we have chosen, and, perhaps most importantly, a challenge to go further.

We are proud of this milestone. We are even more excited about what comes next.

The future of AI should understand everyone. We are building toward that future — and we are building it from here.
